Hello:
Having sworn at a number of clients' Compaqs, you have my sympathies.
I believe your machine has a 33.6 modem.
It requires a Compaq modem driver to work. Installing a driver from a
Windows disk will not work.
You can get the driver from Compaq's Web site. If you have trouble
identifying your modem or which driver you need, call Compaq's customer
service number. They should be able to point the way for you.

regards,
            bruce
