help with Visual C++

I have a problem:
I am trying to write a program that sends commnds to a robot, via the
serial port. but i do not know what algarithm oe sequence of codes would

do it..
if anyone could help, or have done anything similar, your advice  would
be greatly appreciated.
also, if you know of any books that could help me with this, that would
also be great.
