I had similar problem with the "root" directory. I solved it by making
finderinfo and .resource directories also into parent directory of
aufs "root" directory.

My directory hierarchy looks like following:
<my Unix home directory>

  mac_files
    .ADeskTop
    .IDeskTop
    .finderinfo
      <Finder info of Mac files>
