Please excuse my misuse of Apple protocol definitions, I'm not very
conversant on Apple file sharing.
I have a client with a approx. 40 macs on an Appleshare network running on
Ethertalk. They also have a few printers on appletalk. They currently
have a Macintosh file server and use a GatorBox and GatorShare to do a
limited amount of filesharing with the UNIX system.
They want to get rid of the Macintosh file server and use the UNIX system
to be a fileserver. Technically, the GatorBox should do this for them,
however there seem to be and endless supply of bugs and general shortfalls
in the Gatorshare software, and the client are ready to dump it. This is
mainly due to the lack of recourse from Cayman on the part of the problems.
However what they now want is to put and Ethertalk and/or Appleshare stack
on the UNIX system and bypass any gateways.
They are also looking for a commercial product to do the above.
Any pointers at all would be appreciated,
thanx
brian.

Brian. We're in the process of setting up our first Mac/Unix
network using the Locus PC-Interface Mac software. The reports
I've seen on this product have been excellent, but this is our
first time and I don't speak Apple (can you spell ``Get Your
Lawyers Off My Computer!'':-). This server is available on
several platforms include SCO 3.2v4.
Our installation here is using a Sun Sparc running SunOS 4.1.3
which caused a large moment of panic when it wouldn't install
properly and Locus support said initially it was only supported
on SunOS 4.1.<3. We found out very quickly after another phone
call to Locus that it was only an installation script problem and
they provided us with the info necessary to install on this
system. It installed and the Sun boots properly. Now if we can
only figure out how to run a Mac (I have to unlearn a lot to run
one of these things :-).
