OPENCONNECT SOFTWARE PRODUCT SOLUTIONS OpenConnect/TELNET Client and Server OpenConnect/TELNET (OC/TELNET) Client and Server software products feature all the capabilities of the industry standard Client and Server applications for two-way terminal communications between two separate host systems. The Client performs the role of requester of a service, while the Server acts as a respondent, performing the Client's request. OpenConnect/TELNET Client OC/TELNET Client is a software application which resides on an IBM mainframe or midrange system as a VTAM or APPC application, respectively. A 3270 or 5250 user on an IBM host can invoke the OC/TELNET Client and provide it with the name of the destination TCP/IP host. OC/TELNET Client makes the request through the OpenConnect Server to the TCP/IP host Telnet Server, and the user is then logged on in full screen emulation mode as a local ASCII device, such as a VT100 or VT200 terminal. A user no longer needs more than one terminal to access various host systems. All the functionality of a local user is offered to all the networked hosts from a single IBM terminal. Also supported in the OC/TELNET Client for MVS is the TN3270 Client protocol. This valuable feature proves essential when a TCP/IP network includes several IBM hosts which need to communicate with each other transparently across the TCP/IP backbone network. OC/TELNET is available on IBM MVS, VM, System 36, System 38, and AS/400 operating environments. OpenConnect/TELNET Server OC/TELNET Server is an optional software feature available for the OpenConnect Server providing IBM 3270 and 5250 terminal emulation access for TCP/IP users into the SNA network. This application allows TCP/IP hosts supporting a local Telnet Client to connect to OC/TELNET Server for inbound 3270 and 5250 terminal emulation. This application also features high-speed graphics pass-through between IBM mainframes and asynchronous terminals and workstations for those applications supporting the Tektronix CX graphics functions. OpenConnect/FTP OpenConnect/FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Client and Server (OC/FTP) products feature all the capabilities of standard FTP Client and Server applications for TCP/IP. Residing on an IBM host system, OC/FTP provides transparent transmission and reception of data and program files between the TCP/IP and SNA networks. OC/FTP allows you to interactively move files, remove files, list directories, rename files, and view file transfer status. Using the OC/FTP Client application, a user on an IBM host can initiate file transfers to and from hosts on a TCP/IP LAN, both interactively or in batch mode. If a user on a TCP/IP network host requests a file transfer from the IBM system using a local FTP Client application, the request is serviced by the OC/FTP Server on the IBM. OpenConnect/Presentation Services OpenConnect/Presentation Services (OC/PS) is a software option for the TCP/IP host offering enhanced terminal emulation into the SNA network. OC/PS provides such powerful features as: 3270 Models 2, 3, 4, and 5 emulation, 3287 local printer support, PC File Transfer, color support, 3770 RJE emulation, International Character Set support, and an Application Program Interface (API) for programmatic access. OC/PS, Version 3 introduces TN3270 and TN5250 client support, offering 3270 and 5250 service to IBM hosts with IBM's TCP/IP via a number of TCP/IP attachment devices. These devices include attachment to Ethernet, Token Ring and X.25. Also available from the OC/PS, Version 3 family is TN3179G, which enables users on a TCP/IP network to emulate a 3179G All Points Addressable (APA) device to gain access to graphics applications on IBM mainframes. TCP/IP users can have just one terminal emulation program that meets all of their emulation requirements. OpenConnect/APPC OpenConnect/APPC (Advanced Program-to-Program Communication) provides a powerful, direct method of communicating program-to- program between hosts on an IBM SNA network and those in a TCP/IP environment. OpenConnect/APPC (OC/APPC) is a software package residing on the TCP/IP host providing SNA Logical Unit 6.2 (LU6.2) library support, implemented as a set of C language procedure calls. The LU6.2 protocol provides a generalized facility for application-to-application communications using standard IBM bi-directional, half-duplex data streams between communicating transaction programs on IBM and TCP/IP hosts. OC/APPC also provides the lower layers of SNA required for the actual transmission of data through either a host-controlled (PU2.0) or a peer-connected (PU2.1) SNA network. OpenConnect/IP Router OpenConnect/IP Router allows you to route and transfer data packets from one TCP/IP network, over your SNA backbone, to another TCP/IP environment. Data packets are enveloped and transferred with no effect on the data as it passes through the SNA environment. A system half the world away appears to be next door. The OpenConnect/IP Router saves the cost of setting up a totally separate network, plus provides network management capabilities through NetView. OpenConnect/Control Program When routing LAN-to-LAN traffic over an SNA network, routing tables are maintained from a central location on an IBM system using the OpenConnect/Control Program (OC/CP). Depending on your system configuration, one copy of OC/CP may be all that is needed for routing management of an entire worldwide network. OC/CP is provided for both IBM mainframe and midrange systems. OpenConnect/SNALink OpenConnect/SNALink is a co-existence feature that provides connectivity to IBM's provided TCP/IP protocol software creating routing sessions to and from IBM's SNALink (IBM's TCP/IP interface). This feature provides TCP/IP LAN users access to IBM TCP/IP applications, such as NFS, through the OpenConnect Server. OpenConnect/Mail Bridge OpenConnect/Mail Bridge converts Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) based mail documents from a TCP/IP network to Systems Network Architecture Distribution System (SNADS) documents providing a user-transparent interface between these two commonly used electronic mail systems. Your users continue using their existing, familiar E-Mail system which now spans beyond their local network, exchanging mail messages with users on a totally different network. SAMPLE BUSINESS APPLICATION PROBLEMS OPENCONNECT SYSTEMS CAN SOLVE Terminal Emulation - IBM and Non-IBM Do your users require multiple terminals at their desks to access different hosts? Would you like to give your users access to applications on systems other than their local host? Multiple terminal emulation capability from a user's device is a common requirement. OpenConnect products offer you a wide variety of emulation features for communication between IBM SNA hosts and systems on a TCP/IP LAN, such as UNIX, VAX and DOS environments. OpenConnect/TELNET and OpenConnect/Presentation Services products give your users bi-directional terminal emulation flexibility. Now your IBM 3270 and 5250 users can be full screen users on your non-IBM hosts, and your Async users can be full screen IBM 3270 and 5250 users of applications on your IBM mainframe and midrange systems. OpenConnect/TELNET Server resides on the OpenConnect Server and is invoked by a user's local Telnet Client application. OC/TELNET Server offers 3278 Model 2 and 5250 emulation and a special graphics pass-through feature for those devices that support Tektronix CX Graphics data streams. OpenConnect/Presentation Services offers you a more complete set of emulation capabilities for inbound terminals to an IBM host. Included are features such as Models 2, 3, 4, and 5 emulation, local 3287 printer support at your TCP/IP host, full color emulation, International Character Set support, and an Application Program Interface (API). Now your TCP/IP users have all the functionality of a local 3270 device, and more! OC/PS, Version 3 with TN3179G emulation extends the functionality even further to include IBM 3179G All Points Addressable graphics emulation. Now your TCP/IP LAN users can act as a 3179G device to access the powerful graphics applications resident on the IBM mainframe, such as GDDM applications, Interactive Chart Utility, and others. OC/PS, Version 3 introduces the common TN protocol for the 3270, 5250 and 3179G emulation. This opens up your usage of Ethernet attachment devices to include not only the OpenConnect Server, but also the IBM 8232, 3172, and other configurations that support the TN Server protocol. All the OpenConnect/TELNET and OpenConnect/Presentation Services products include full keyboard mapping and interactive HELP screens to assist your users as they become familiar with their new capabilities. File Transfer - Sharing Data Between Dissimilar Hosts Moving data between IBM SNA hosts and TCP/IP-based hosts, such as UNIX, VMS, DOS and others, is a common requirement. How to move data efficiently across dissimilar hosts not only to process the data, but also to submit jobs for print, calculation, analysis and database updates is a common problem. OpenConnect/FTP Client and Server products offer the ability to request and service data requests across the SNA and TCP/IP networks. An IBM user or application can issue a request for file transfer using a local OC/FTP Client. This can be done both interactively and in batch mode. The OC/FTP Client connects to the destination TCP/IP host's local FTP Server to fulfill the requested service. OC/FTP Server on the IBM host responds to and services requests from FTP Clients on the networked TCP/IP hosts. Using the OC/FTP Server, jobs can be submitted directly into printer and reader queues to maximize the use of printer and computer resources. Data can be moved between the networks in two other ways with either OpenConnect/Presentation Services 3770 or PC File Transfer (IND$FILE). OC/PS 3770 allows your TCP/IP users 3770 RJE emulation into the SNA network. An Application Program Interface (API) is also available for these products to automate repetitive functions performed by users. LAN-to-LAN Communications Over Your SNA Network How do you bring geographically dispersed networks, SNA and TCP/IP LANs under one virtual network, and manage it? That question plagues many companies. Using the OpenConnect products and the OpenConnect/IP Router, your remote networks can be brought together using the resources available in your SNA network. With the IP Router, you eliminate extra lines, modems, equipment, and network management nightmares. The OpenConnect/Control Program provides you with a central management facility to manage the routing paths for TCP/IP LAN-to-LAN communications using the SNA network as a transport. Users on one TCP/IP LAN can access another TCP/IP host on a separate LAN using the SNA network as the carrier. Plus, you get the benefits of SNA and TCP/IP internetwork communications for terminal emulation, file transfer, and all the other exciting features of the total OpenConnect product family. IBM AS/400 and System 3X Interoperability with TCP/IP Host Another requirement you may be facing is how to provide communications between applications and users on IBM midrange systems and TCP/IP hosts running such operating systems as UNIX, AIX, DOS, VMS, and others. The rich feature set of the OpenConnect Server and software products brings all these systems together for enterprise networking. The OpenConnect Server, both the SDLC and Token Ring models, provides the gateway function between your AS/400 and/or System 3X systems and your TCP/IP LAN-based hosts. Now Async users on the TCP/IP hosts can be full screen IBM 5250 users on the IBM host, and 5250 users can be full screen Async users on a TCP/IP host using the OpenConnect/TELNET. File transfer requirements are met with the OpenConnect/FTP Client and Server. E-Mail exchange needs can be met with the OpenConnect/Mail Bridge. Your AS/400 users with SNADS-based E-Mail, such as AS/400 Office, can send and receive mail with users on the TCP/IP network using SMTP-based mail products, all with the OC/Mail Bridge. Users can continue to use their familiar E-Mail package to interchange mail with users on totally separate networks. Distributed application requirements are also met with OpenConnect/APPC. Applications on your IBM and TCP/IP hosts are brought together using the Logical Unit 6.2 program for peer-to-peer communications; all using one common programming interface. These are just a few of the business problem scenarios that you may be facing for internetwork and interhost connectivity. OpenConnect provides you with a common bond between your various vendor host systems, for both application and user communication requirements. OpenConnect networking is networking from the user's perspective.
