Some protocol converters (Avatar, Andrew, Printer Systems and others)
support a "hex transparency" mode. It looks for user-specified trigger
characters in the output datastream that controls transparency.

An example data stream:
   HERE COMES AN ESCAPE CHARACTER==>%&1B%&
where "%&" is the trigger sequence.

If anything appears between the trigger characters that is not in the
range 0-9, A-F, then it is discarded -- even linefeeds or c/r. This
makes it possible for us to send very large font downloads out of
(for example) JES2.

We use these protocol converters for HP laserjets to do font and form
downloads out of JES2 (the forms are generated by a JES exit #15).

Note that it is a nuisance for both the leading and trailing trigger
characters to be the same; most protocol converters allow you to define
different trigger sequences, but at least one does not.
