Hello comp.protocols.iso'ers

I plan to implement a part of MMS(OSI AL protocol).  I have
the formal protocol of MMS as defined by the standards comm.,
and am learning ASN.1 syntax.

How do we go about implementing an OSI application. I mean
Are there any examples, procedures, software tools or relating
books which can help me in this regard. ( The formal protocol
definition seems to be too voluminous and verbose.  How do I
digest so much information and proceed with a implementation ?)

Any pointers in this regard are welcome
