And now for something completely different. (The actual subject!!)

I got a note suggesting I add accm=0 to my /etc/ppphosts entry.

This would not seem necessary since the prototype /etc/ppphosts
file very clearly claims accm=0 is the default.  Any my IP
provider did a status dump which seemed to indicate the mask was 0.

Whatever, I added accm=0 and now I get FTP/PPP downloads as fast
as 1.6 kb/s on zipped archives.  Not all transfers are that
fast; on the same 143k ZIP archive I got 1.3, 1.5, 1.6 and 1.6
kb/s on successive downloads during the same FTP session.

I can't claim absolutely that accm=0 is the magic cookie, BUT
nothing else I've tried accelerated PPP/FTP.

So there was a wee bit of truth in the paranoid flame that I
had purposefully misconfigured PPP to be slow.
