The BBS sysops around here all recommend Zmodem. It reduces its block size in the presence of line errors to reduce retransmissions. It increases the block size again if things clean up. The best thing about if you're paying for a call is "crash recovery". If you restart a Zmodem transmission after a line drop, Zmodem detects that there is a partial file on the receiving end and just retransmits the missing data. Joe Kellett
