Hi, Which entity is currently is responsible for registration of Ethernet protocols? (i.e. who issues the protocol number used in the ethernet header). I understand that if a protocol is registered as a bona fide Ethernet protocol this implies it will not conflict with any other protocols on in use on a LAN. If this is true why do some sites restrict the range of protocols users may use on their LAN? I guess one reason might be to limit the amount of bandwidth used and thus reduce network congestion. (i.e. some protocols make more use of broadcasts than others) I wonder how many sites still limit the choice of protocols? If there is sufficient interest I'll summarize.
