Problem with "complement error" in xmodem

Hello, I'm having problems with xmodem on a modem
(Twincom Commuter) using Quicklink. (Hardware is a 4-year-old
Zenith XT laptop.)

There haven't been any problems downloading with xmodem from the U. of
Pittsburgh mainframe, but whenever I try to do it from CompuServe,
I get a "complement error".

If anyone could give me some help as to what sort of problem this is
--hardware vs software--let alone how to solve it, I would be
grateful.
