looking for simple PC network s/w

Hi, there,

If this is the wrong place to post such a question, please accept my
aplogies or inform me some points.

Basically, we have some application s/w running on TWO 486s under
MS-DOS 5.0. we now would like to find some simple network software
which can let the two 486s share some database files on one of the
machines. All we need is to let the remote 486 virturally sees the
database as a hard drive, say E: drive. We surely know that novell
NetWare can do the work ( and much, much more). We are more interested
in some other simple network s/w which can do the above work with less
requirements of hardware (e.g. parallel ports themselves, rather than
Ethenet boards).

Since I'm new to the PC network s/w, any hints will be helpful.

Thanks in advance,

---

You might have better luck in comp.sys.ibm.pc,
which also covers compatibles.

I have not used it myslef, but I know several people
who are very enthusiastic about Lantastic.
It is inexpensive (<$100/node) and works well.

You can also get kits with network cards, software, and cable,
right from Lantastic or its dealers. The local Computer City store
in Rochester has about 5 or 6 variations (Twisted pair, Thinnet, etc.).

There's a book out, _Running Lantastic_, by King, that is
very good on choosing and setting up your network.

Hope this helps.
