SNAP (SubNetwork Access Protocol) is a thin sublayer added to extend the
limited demultiplexing capability built into 802.2 LLC. In LLC,
demultiplexing is based on Link Level SAPs. There are only six useful
bits for defining standard code assignments for client protocols, making
it difficult to get a globally unique assignment. One LSAP value (0xAA)
was assigned to indicate the presence of the SNAP sublayer header immediately
following the LLC header. The SNAP header is composed of a three octet
OUI (Organizationally Unique Identifier) followed by a 2 octet type code.
The OUI is basically the Manufacturer code assigned by IEEE for Ethernets
and other LANs. The type code values are administered by the organization
defined by the OUI. By convention, OUI 00-00-00 has been used to mean
Ethernet Types as administered by Xerox. SNAP is documented in current
versions of the 802.1 documents (I forget which section).
