There's an interesting column by Peter Salus in the
Dec 1992 SunExpert magazine in which he talks
briefly about Carl Malamud's book, "Exploring the
Internet". Malamud relates the story about how he
persuaded the ITU and ISO organizations to put
their standards online for a period of three months.
The experiment was killed because (according to
Malamud) the ITU derives 25% of its income from
the printing and selling of standards. The ITU also
doesn't think (again, according to Malamud) the
internet reaches the "right sort of people".
Take a look at the column if you get the chance,
it's quite interesting. Think I'll look for the
book, too.
