question - performance and fault management in networks

Greetings!

I am trying to identify the problems that are considered to be the key
problems in the area of Network Management, going beyond CMIP, DME,
and SNMP etc. In particular I am focusing attention on fault and
performance management issues at the transport layer. I would
like to hear from people who are working in the related areas
or have some experience and/or ideas on the topic that they would like to
share.

The problems of interest for example, could be related to :
	- abstractions used to describe the system
	- protocol design, specification, and validation techniques
	- modelling and statistical techniques
	- framework for dealing with incomplete and erroneous information
	  on problems
	- gathering and analyis of problem related data
	- automation of detection and recovery
	- design of suitable interfaces to aid discovery, diagnosis and
	  recovery

I would prefer any feedback via e-mail. I shall post a summary
of the information thus collected.

Thanks for your help.
