I have been asked by someone to post the following query? She would like to do the following: Use Ethernet instead of RS232 for communication between a PC running a control system (talking to a plant via I/O cards and termination panels) and another PC running a SCADA package used for data logging. The data logging PC could be connected to a Ethernet-network. The control pc has to "look" like a standard PLC to the data logging PC so that the control PC would be able to communicate with any SCADA(supervisory Control and Data Aquisition) package. Scada packages support most PLC protocols). This is currently achieved by programming the control PC to use the MODBUS protocol. MODBUS, however, was developed for RS232 communication and we want to switch to Ethernet for reliability and efficiency reasons. 1. Could MODBUS protocol be used with Ethernet? 2. What protocol would make a good standard for Ethernet? DDE/Netbios? 3. Any other "standard" PLS protocol? Profibus/Mini-MAP? 4. What about isolation for the Ethernet port on the control PC? 5. Any other suggestions?
