Well this should have been simple but .... :-)

Ok, we have the need to connect two machines/networks over a WAN and would
like to be about to access our Sybase 4.8 database.  Since this WAN is over
standard phone lines (not leased lines), I looked for a version of PPP that
would do dialup-on-demand.  I found Kirk Smith's dp2.2 by checking the
comp.prototocols.ppp FAQ.

I setup two SparcStations with MultiTech MultiModems to test things.  First
I verified that Sybase worked OK with a normal (le0) ethernet connection.
Worked just fine. Next I installed PPP, unplugged the thin net and turned
on the modems.  Talk about simple!  Had the serial link up and going inside
of an hour (had to take into account silly setup errors :-)).

First I checked the basics: rlogin, telnet, ftp, mail, ping, etc.  No problem.
Works like charm.  Now I give Sybase a try.  And here's the results:

	./isql
	Password: 
	Operating-system error:
        	Connection refused
	DB-LIBRARY error:
        	Unable to connect: SQL Server is unavailable or does not exist.


I checked for user permissions, etc,  but to no avail.

Any hints?

I've been talking to Sybase support but most of the people I've talked to
have not even heard of PPP.  In the latest round, my contact said Sybase
did not have the resources to "support" another third party product. But she
said she would try one more time to find someone in Sybase who could at
least spell PPP :-)
