http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/htbin/rfc/rfc2364.html , states:

Control Signals - The AAL5 layer MUST provide control signals to
the PPP layer which indicate when the virtual connection link
has become connected or disconnected. These provide the "Up"
and "Down" events to the LCP state machine [1] within the PPP
layer.

Some ASDL providers purposely disable OAM events within their ATM
networks, thus preventing the up/down state of the PVC to be propagated
between the two peers in a PPPoA connection. For example, if a customer
ADSL modem loses sync, the DSLAM may not indicate that event to the
attached PPPoA aggregation router.

Techs I've spoken to at Redback, indicate that this is necessary due to
the many *false* pvc down indications that would occur and that it's not
necessary to relay this info for PPP to work reliably.

Given that this is listed as "MUST" in the spec, I'm curious if anyone
can think of how this might impact the integrity/reliability of the PPP
FSM (finite state machine).

I think that, if it helps me to get a better high score on
Robotron, then I am all for it.
Seriously, this was so far over my head, I couldn't even feel
the whoosh <g>
