I think there is a small bug in pppd. When two ppp lines are started like: ifconfig ppp0 up ifconfig ppp1 up Then two lock files will be generated in /usr/spool/uucp/LCK... that are owned by pppd. This is as it should be. BUT after: ifconfig ppp0 down Then BOTH LOCK FILES are removed. This is a problem if getty is sitting waiting to get into the act. Now I have getty playing with ppp1's line, as well as ppp0. Result, bring one line down and loose both, or don't allow login on the ppp lines. Set up the network for connections only in one direction. Next Problem, still pppd. If carrier is lost on the ppp line, pppd doesn't care! He just sits there and sends his packets to the modem blindly. When the line finally times out after idle=n then he will drop the dead line and re-start it. This works but if idle=60 to keep the line up most of the working day, this is a problem. Does anyone have a solution to either of these problems PLEASE? Please email if you can. Digex (my connection) is having a problem with the biz.sco groups. I should be able to see all the ppp group's postings. John Watson, Middlesex NJ, jwatson@digex.cnj.net

He just sits there John, Check your configuration of the sco machine and your modem to be it is set up to recognize Carrier Detect (CD) line on the RS232 interface. If your using a Hayes compatible modem, see if &C1 is set. Might also want to check to see if &D2 is set to 'reset' the modem when the sco system drops DTR. In the pppd config options, check to be sure 'modem' option is included. I use these options on a Sun running 4.1.3 and everything works great! Rich adar0@routers.com
