Hello !
I'm experiencing some WWW connection problems when trying to reach several
web-sites.
A friend of mine suggested me to use a ping program in order to monitor
all
WWW connections.
I did so, but now I don't understand the meaning of the ping report I got.
The following was the report, generated by Ping Thingy program:
=======================================================
; Ping Log generated by Ping Thingy 2.0
; Date created: 12/29/96 2:55:26 PM
;
Hostname: www.eldish.net
Host address: 204.179.69.41
Packet Size : 64 bytes
Send Interval: 1000 ms
Hops: 15
Timeout: 18000 ms
Number of Packets Sent: 7
Number of Packets Received: 0
Percentage of Packets Lost: 100%
Total Trip Stats: 99999 Minimum / 0 Average / 0 Maximum
=======================================================
Note: eldish.net is my Internet Service Provider
Can someone give me an explanation or any tip, so that I be able to solve
my WWW connection problems ?
Thanks in advance.
Massimo

Hi, On Fri, 21 Feb 1997, wrote: >I'm experiencing some WWW connection problems when trying to reach several >web-sites. What problems exactly? Do you get past looking the site up, or does it hang once the site has been contacted? Some ISPs don't carry some sites in their DNS's, so you can't connect to them without playing around a bit. >A friend of mine suggested me to use a ping program in order to monitor >all >WWW connections. Pinging a site just times the flow of a little packet of data to that site and back again. It gives an idea of how slow the route is, and whether or not the site is actually responding (or even there). >Hostname: www.eldish.net >Host address: 204.179.69.41 The hostname is the sitename you'll be familiar with. The host address is the IP address which uniquely identifies the site on the internet. When you use any site name, it is looked up on a Domain Name Server (DNS) to get the IP address. If your service provider's DNS doesn't have an entry for a site then your application can't get the IP address and won't be able to connect. >Packet Size : 64 bytes >Send Interval: 1000 ms >Hops: 15 >Timeout: 18000 ms Packet size is the size of the little 'test bundle' bounced off the site you specified above. 64 bytes is usually used. Send interval is how often this packet is thrown at the site. 1000ms is 1 second, so the above site is pinged with 64 bytes once a second. The program is listening for the return of those packets and is timing them. >Number of Packets Sent: 7 >Number of Packets Received: 0 >Percentage of Packets Lost: 100% Your ping program sent 7 packets and got none back so there was 100% loss. In this case it means that there is no connection available between you and that site. You should get x packets sent and all x of them received after so-many milliseconds. >Total Trip Stats: 99999 Minimum / 0 Average / 0 Maximum This shows the quickest return time (Min), the longest return time (Max) and the average of all 7. The 99999 shouldn't really be there - it suggests a minimum return time of 100 seconds. Probably the way the program does its maths doesn't work quite right for zero times, etc. >Note: eldish.net is my Internet Service Provider >Can someone give me an explanation or any tip, so that I be able to solve >my WWW connection problems ? Does your provider have a support line? You should ring this if so. It may be a modem setting. I'm afraid I don't really know what it is. You should be able to see your own provider via ping. Get onto them and ask for support. Regards, Chris
