Need Help with SAMBA: Linux(server) and WfWg (client)

(Please excuse this post if it is repeated. I called my Internet provider and
they were unable to tell me the domain of the post. The said it was limitted
to local users only. I want others to see it also)

Hi. I am attempting to install Samba on a Linux box. It compiled OK, and it
seems that testparm worked OK. (However I don't understand the results).

1. When I try step 7 from the installation procedure, listing the shares on
the server, I type the following

smbclient -L hostname (where hostname = MARK)

and I get:

			Server time....
			Timezone .....
			Domain=[WORKGROUP] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 1.9.15p6]
SMBtconX failed. ERRSRV - ERRbadpw (Bad password -
				name/password pair in Tree
Connect or Session Setup are invalid.)
Perhaps you are using the wrong sharename, username or
 			password?
			......

My smb.conf file looks like:

		[homes]
			workgroup = MYGROUP
			guest ok = no
			read only = no

(I am not concerned about security at this point)

When I compiled the source I selected Linux without passwords.

2. For the client, Windows for workgroups, I took the files dsk3-1.exe and
dsk3-2.exe from Microsoft's ftp site ftp.microsoft.com in directory :
		bussys/Clients/MSCLIENTS

I cannot load the network drivers from these programs and then start
WFW. I get a windows error.

I have a 12 station WFW network running using MS TCP/IP.

By the way, I can telnet into my Linux box, through ethernet cards without any
problem.

What I want to do is have linux as the server, WfW as the client, and be able
to print on the printer connected to the client from the server. I also want
to be able to access the client's hard disk from the server so I can back up
client files on the server's tape drive.

After reading the documentation on Samba, it appears that this can be done.
However I have run into problems and could use some help/ suggestions.

Thanks.

I can't really help with this one - try compiling with passwords??

If you're running WfWg over TCP/IP already, then you don't need _anything_ else on
the WfWg clients. They'll be fine.

I hope you get it sorted - it works okay when it works :-).

Hmm, you mean without shadow passwords?

I've seen this error before, but forgot all about it.
What *might* help:

*) Is nmbd running and in the workgroup you want it to be?

*) Enable guest login and change the guest account from 'nobody' to 'ftp'
The 'ftp' account should have a valid shell (/bin/bash) but a disbled
   password ( a '*' in /etc/passwd).

No clue, I used wfw before (now win95) and they both worked.

A general hint: make one samba server the master browser for the workgroup.
It can overrule wfw. Then mounting drives from the wfw pc's is much more
userfriendly.

Looks like you have to provide the username; try -U (?) and a valid
username (ie, in passwd) and see what you get.

I just did something very similar. I configed it so that the Linux
box 'bashful' was the server, and the WFW box 'dopey' was the client.
I have the printer and tape drive on bashful, and can print to it just
fine from dopey. I haven't tried the tape drive yet but assume all is
OK because I can see the entire C: drive on dopey. It's just a matter
of getting the backup software and configuring it (I hope).

Hope this helps. If not, e-mail, and maybe we can work it out
off-line.

I think these are the drivers are only required for a DOS system not
WFW. The file you want is WFWT32.exe at the same site.

I have 25 wfwg workstation and two linux internet servers here and
they are all networked using samba....
I had a few problems connecting at first, but after a while i figured
out what is causing the fault, i runs brillainently...:)

Mind you...you should compile it using password....
and when you connect to linux box..you will have to use....
a linux user account or share directory on linux with....
valid password you define in the samba config file...
other wise linux will refuse connection....

Try reading Samba FAQ's that explained and helped me alot...
