I am a Network Engineer for a large computer manufacturer with the
responsibility for defining our site (campus of 4 buildings, 2700 people, 3500
networked devices) strategy for local area network management. The goal of
my project is to define processes for network management that could be offered
to our site customers. This process for network management will include (as
a start) network performance monitoring, fault management, account management,
and configuration management. Lucky for us the network consists of mainly
TCP/IP devices running SNMP.

I have been doing some investigation, including trying to locate reference
materials for network management (TCP/IP and SNMP environment).

I came across a book recently published by Addison-Wesley:
"Network Management: A Practical Perscpective" by Leinwand & Fang.

The book is a fairly extensive overview of Network Management including the 5
OSI areas: Fault, Performance, Configuration, Security, and Account Management.

It has good sections regarding SNMP and MIB (this was one of its strengths). Itgives the reader just what it says: A PRACTICAL approach to managing LANs/WNAs
and dicusses several approaches using what it calls: "A simple tool; a more
complex tool; and an advanced tool".

Several questions:

1) Those of you chartered with providing Network Management Services or
responsible for the Management of your LAN(S), have you suggestions for
additional references; have you read the book, what do you think?
2) Have you suggestions for implementing quality fault, configuration,
performance monitoring net mgmt services for a complex network?
3) What tools/processes have you used with a)great success, b) moderate
success, c) limited or no success?

Thank You for any insights you may have.
