snmp-controlled stereo systems

I'm going to buy a stereo for my office. I've heard of at least one
guy who's put together the pieces to control a stereo receiver with
SNMP. I assume the receiver has an RS-232 port connected to a machine
running a custom SNMP agent.

Anybody know anything about this? I'd be happy just to get some info
about a stereo that's computer-controllable.

You should talk to Simon Hackett <simon@internode.com.au>. He did a very
impressive demo of this at Interop 90 and at the Australian Networkshop 90.

There was a write up in ConneXions, April 1991.

The SNMP stereo is was a collaborative effort involving TGV here in
glorious Santa Cruz California and Internode Systems in glorious Adelade (
pardon my spelling) in Austrailia.

The mibs have been posted and are, I belive, in all the standard mib
archives. Simon Hackett (Internode) is usually listening to the internet
snmp list.

One of the tricks is to use stereo gear that has a remote control
capability, especially if it has a remote control bus to tie amps to cd
players, etc.

Epilogue Technologies Demo'ed a CD stereo system (w/receiver) controled
by SNMP at an InterOp a few years back. I don't think they ever
made a commercial product out of it, but I could be Wrong. You can
reach them at (805) 650-7107.
