multicast on SUNOS
#15404

Sunos does not support IP multicast unless you apply the
appropriate patches. But it does support ethernet level
multicast, by calling ioctl(fd, SIOCADDMULTI, &ifr).

Since it is possible to convert an IP multicast address to an ethernet
address (see RFC 1112), for any given IP multicast group, one
should be able to sign up the matching ethernet multicast address.
and then "see" the multicast packets.

I have verified this by using multicast -p (-p does NOT put the
network card into promiscuous mode) and the multicast packets show
up as regular UDP packets with the destination IP address being
the IP multicast group address.

My problem is, I cannot seem to get these packets filtered up to
a socket, I have tried regualr UDP sockets, raw IP sockets, without
success. I am guessing that the IP layer is seeing the destination
address as one it does not recognize, and is throwing the packet
away.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions??? (Other that applying
the multicast patch or moving to SOLARIS).

Please CC me on any followup posts.
