I have a laptop running windows98 with a NIC which I carry around. Is there any way to setup the laptop to allow me to log onto different NT domains on different networks. This means that I have to be able to assign different IP addresses to the laptop for every single network. Additionally, other TCP/IP configurations parameters such as DNS, DHCP, WINS, etc. will also have to change for every single network. This will also apply if other networks may require running different protocols such as IPX, NetBEUI, etc. Is there anyway to automate this using some kind of configuration profile (or script) that at boot time, I could select which network I am logging on, and thus the corresponding TCP/IP parameters (or other protocols relevant to that network) be automatically be assigned. This would tremendously make my job easier so that I don't have to change my configuration manually everytime I am going on a different network. I appreciate any suggestions that you may have.. Regards, Al

(I'll give you an NT answer, since I'm not familiar with 98. YMMV, but hopefully not by too much.) If all your networks use DHCP to assign IP addresses, and if the DHCP servers are set to provide the gateway address, DNS servers, etc., then the solution is nearly trivial. Depending on the NIC driver, the computer may or may not notice immediately when it's on the wrong network; if it doesn't, you'll have to do an "ipconfig /release" followed by an "ipconfig /renew". The differing protocols can be handled with separate hardware configurations. But the fact is that if extra protocols are running, it doesn't usually do any harm. They just won't get used in that network connection. Set your bindings to favor the protocols most likely to be needed. -- ___ _ - Bob /__) _ / / ) _ _ (_/__) (_)_(_) (___(_)_(/_____________________________________ bob@1776.COM Robert K.
