Hi,
I recently got NTP 3.4 from udel.edu working without any major
problem. There was a small problem where I was getting
Lost NTP peer
message in syslog and Craig Everhart (@transarc) mentioned that it
happens because of the skew between the clocks (the local & reomote)
is larger than some threshold (128 ms). I am gonna look at the code
LATER to check that unless one of the gurus out reply that it is just
a normal message.
Meanwhile I started playing with xntp and out here all other are
"ntpd" as opposed to "xntpd's". The following is a simple config file:
precision -7
peer 129.214.10.151 version 1
server 129.214.9.22 version 1
where these two machines run "ntpd's".
Now when i run the xntpd in debug mode I see these messages...
# xntpd -d
Jun 20 15:42:07 xntpd[8372]: xntpd version 1.3
kernel vars: tickadj = 10000, tick = 0, hz = 100
adj_precision = 10000, tvu_maxslew = 990000, tsf_maxslew = 0.fd70a377
init_io: maxactivefd 7
peer_config: addr 129.214.10.151 mode 1 version 1 key 0
peer_config: addr 129.214.9.22 mode 3 version 1 key 0
sendpkt(129.214.10.151, 0.0.0.0, 48)

and after changing the time, the same messages continues BUT the time
does NOT get synchronized. You will see that the "tick" variable is
"0" AND I get "hz" vaue from the kernel rather than what xntpd DOES.
However, If I kill "xntp" and start "ntpd" it immediatedly
synchronizes the time.
Is there something more I need in the configuration file for "xntpd"
over "ntpd" (w/o more bells and whistles). I am specifying that the
peer and server are version 1.
Thanks in advance,
/Pradeep
