Two regular features of comp.research.japan are reports written
by Dr. David Kahaner and information on technical papers published
in Japan generated by the Japan CS Project. This posting overviews
these features, primarily for new readers.
KAHANER REPORTS:
Dr. David Kahaner is a numerical analyst from the U.S. National
Institute of Standards and Technology (formerly the National Bureau
of Standards) on a long-term sabbatical at the Office of Naval Research
Asian office in Tokyo. Since arriving in 1989, Kahaner has written
close to 300 reports on various aspects of computing in Japan and
elsewhere in Asia. All of these reports are posted to comp.research.japan
as they are issued; most appear later in hardcopy form in ONR's Scientific
Information Bulletin. The reports are also available for anonymous
FTP from site cs.arizona.edu, directory japan/kahaner.reports. An
index to these reports appears in a companion posting.
JAPAN CS PROJECT:
The Japan CS Project at The University of Arizona is funded by the
Office of Naval Research to collect and disseminate contents information
from Japanese CS journals. This information is posted to comp.research.japan
as it is generated, and is also available for anonymous FTP from site
cs.arizona.edu, directory japan/table.contents. Information on articles
from the following journals are currently being disseminated; the sponsoring
organizations are in parenthesis:
Journal of Information Processing (Information Processing Society
of Japan)
Transactions of the IEICE (The Institute of Electronics, Information,
and Communication Engineers)
Computer Software (Japan Society for Software Science and Technology)
Journal of Information Processing and Management (Japan Information
Center of Science and Technology)
Transactions of the ISICE (The Institute of Systems, Control, and
Information Engineers)
SIG Series (Information Processing Society of Japan)
Scientific Information Bulletin (U.S. Office of Naval Research)
Subscriptions to a number of other journals are currently pending.
Due to resource limitations, the Japan CS Project cannot supply copies
of articles at the present time. To obtain articles, the following
approaches are suggested:
-- Contact one of the authors and ask them to send a copy. You can
often infer an email address with a little effort, or use the
actual smail address given in the posting if it's complete enough.
A list of Japanese email domains together with some hints on
inferring addresses is available for anonymous FTP from site
cs.arizona.edu, file japan/email.domains.
-- Check your local library. Even if they don't subscribe to the
journal directly, they will often be willing to get you a copy
of the article for a modest fee using the Interlibrary Loan system.
The first is especially recommended if the desired article is in Japanese
since related articles in English can then be requested at the same time.
