Determining global position?

Does anyone know of a fast and accurate way to determine the position of a
robot within a fairly large area (~3-4 acres)? We're considering using GPS
using a differential algorithm to improve accurracy. Supposedly you can
reduce error down to +-20cm but I'm not sure if that method will give us
feedback fast enough. We'll be using the position information to navigate
the robot around obstacles via remote control. The robot will be fitted
with a pentium classic 1XX MHZ laptop and info will be passed back and forth
via wireless LAN.
Is this a problem that has been licked? I'd greatly appreciate any
input any of you might have.

Thanks,
Zac Wolfe
