VIRTUAL HUMANS CONFERENCE, JUNE 17-19, 1997
Universal City, California
Organized by VR NEWS and EDS Inc.
--------------------------------------------------------
Hear ye! Hear ye!
VR NEWS is composing the conference program for the second annual
VIRTUAL HUMANS CONFERENCE to be held June 17-19, 1997, at the
Universal City Hilton in Los Angeles. We are booking the world's-best
in terms of humanoid technologies -- both autonomous and
human-controlled. If you are working in this arena and are interested
in speaking at the conference, please contact VR NEWS' U.S. Editor Dr.
Sandra Kay Helsel (san@well.com) and let us know of your efforts.
The event will bring together leading researchers and practitioners
from a wide range of disciplines, all with a common interest in the
development of humanoid technologies of one kind or another. The
widely acclaimed VIRTUAL HUMANS '96 was attended by creative arts
professionals, industrial designers, ergonomics and human factors
specialists, academic researchers, anthropologists and sociologists,
aerospace and military simulation experts, and games and VR Software
developers. The online discussion group
v-humans@ece.uwaterloo.ca
arose out of the original gathering. Take a look!
Presentations the First Day of the event will showcase the best
worldwide in the Virtual Humans field. The seminal 1996 lineup was
comprised of notables such as Professor Nadia Magnenat Thalmann from
the University of Geneva ("Virtual Marilyn"), Professor Norman Badler
from the University of Pennsylvania ("Jack"), Chris Landreth of
Wavefront/Alias ("the end," an animation), Paragraph Inc.'s Mitra
("Avatars on the Web"), Dr. Jonathan Waldern of Virtuality Group plc
("Avatars and VR"), and Linda Jacobson, Silicon Graphic's VR
Evangelist. We expect last year's leaders to return and join 1997's
additions.
The Second Day will feature a series of concurrent,
application-specific sessions including virtual human modeling
software, animation software, motion capture, anthropometric
databases, speech and dialogue, artificial-life, Web avatars,
ergonomic humans, standards, dismounted infantry, film/TV, and agents.
Moderators with content expertise are welcome to participate in the
development of the respective sessions.
The Third Day of workshops will be scheduled with presentations by
developers and vendors, informational briefings packed with
demonstrations and interaction (*not* commercial sales pitches).
A two-day exhibition of virtual humans and supporting hardware and
software will run alongside the conference. Exhibitor demonstrations
were very popular last year and we are planning a greatly enlarged
exhibit area for the 1997 event. For advance exhibition information,
contact VR NEWS US Sales Manager Greg Laskaris (Laskaris1@aol.com).
