        Mechatronics for Agile Manufacturing

Abstract Due Date: February 22, 1999
Manuscript Due Date: August 23, 1999

Part of Photonics East 1999,
19-22 September 1999,
Hynes Convention Center, Boston, Massachusetts USA

Mechatronics refers to the synergistic integration of mechanical, electrical,
and computer control technologies into a functioning device or system. This
interdisciplinary area of research is evolving to integrate optical,
information, communications and other technologies. The conference focuses on
mechatronics for agile manufacturing, with an emphasis on technologies which
show potential for immediate or near-term transfer to industrial applications.

Agile manufacturing is characterized by the ability to setup and changeover
production quickly in response to customer demands, competitor strategies, or
other market forces. Flexibility is important for adapting to parts variations,
for small batch production, for production of a family of product variations
on the same line, and for allowing the reuse of existing equipment in the
manufacturing of new products.

For this reason, robots and other flexible actuators, and computer vision and
other flexible sensors are commonly applied to achieve manufacturing agility.
Manufacturing systems designed to be flexible can be customized for a particular
product by straightforward reconfiguration of the hardware and software.
Modularity, interface standardization and ease-of-use are additional features
which facilitate agility in manufacturing.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
subassembly transport, subassembly fixturing, parts feeding, end effectors,
parts grasping, modular workcell accessories, manufacturing process modeling,
process control algorithms, assembly, insertion, and fastening operations,
operations with flexible or oddform parts, precision manufacturing operations,
fault tolerance and error recovery in manufacturing, non-machining robotic
manufacturing operations, vision guided manufacturing processes, production
layout, setup, and changeover planning, welding, glueing, painting, and
semiconductor processing, unique robots and actuators for manufacturing,
novel sensors for manufacturing, man-machine interfaces for manufacturing,
and case studies.
