The United Nations? Objective? Isn't that one of them-there Oxymorons?
IMHO - yes.

OK, you stated that:
>>The why does the USA have one of the highest violent crime rates in the
>>developed world to go along with the highest rate of private ownership
>>of lethal weapons?
Which has nothing at all to do with:

In that study (see http://www.tsra.com/Lott19.htm), it is clearly evident
that the UN decided to include suicides, Law-enforcement shootings, and
accidental gun-death - which included friendly-fire deaths in military
training. None of which can honestly be attributed to "Violent crime" in the
USA.

I do not argue that gun-deaths are higher here than in Japan or the UK -
excluding Ireland. Gun deaths there are MUCH higher (per capita, even now
that there is a "cease fire") than in the US. It still does not have
anything to do with the violent crime rate in the US. For that matter, it
doesn't have much to do with Share Sniffer either.

John, Here's how it stacks up, whether you agree or not: With goverment
intervention, port scanning, share sniffer, Back Orifice and their ilk will
not decrease in use/abuse. Some poor schmuck (most likely a comp-sci
student) will get trotted out for public viewing and flogging by network
talking heads as an "evil hacker", and then the media - which Dave Mundt was
totally on the mark with:
>> America's "violent society" is, in many cases, a media lie pushed
>> because it is attention grabbing and makes money for the broadcast and
>> print media, not because it is "truth"
 - will go on its way and get back to reporting (here in SoCal) "STORM WATCH
2001 - but wait, lets see how the slow speed chase on the 405 is doing" :-)
. It's a repetitive cycle, as predictible in its repetiveness as spring
following winter, summer after spring, etc.

We've gotten way off track; I submit that we respectfully agree to disagree,
and for now, I'll crawl back into the fridge and take care of my network.
Just don't break into my house unless you want a glutemous maximus full of
buckshot. And don't carjack me, because I have a remotely operated kill
switch, and I WILL stall the car when you pull into traffic - hopefully in
front of a big rig. :-)
