For example, SunOS 4.1.4 has a "+" in /etc/hosts.equiv (!) when installed fresh off the CD (not to mention a ton of other holes that need to be patched). Just about every Linux distribution runs a bunch of services out of the box, including sendmail and NFS, which aren't necessary for many home users and which certainly shouldn't be run if they aren't needed and explicity configured. >I hope good software migrates to Linux SOON so we the people of the >world can send a quiet message to Redmond once and for all! but Linux >without quality software is useless for the masses! I know I'm OT >again! when I rant I rant I like Linux, but I would not argue that the out-of-the-box (figuratively speaking) security in most of the common distributions (Slackware, Redhat, etc.) is any better than that of any recent MS product. (Though I would agree that it can be made to be more secure with a little work.)
