If it weren't for large numbers of poorly secured hosts sitting on the net, "Distributed Denial of Service Attacks" would be a non-issue. The reason that sites like Yahoo and E-trade lost millions of dollars for a day or 2 was precisely because of poorly-secured hosts. Then of course there are all the compromised machines that are used as jumping off points for various other hacking activities, like more port-scanning, break-ins, etc. So no, you are not operating in a vacuum if you have a poorly configured/insecure host on the 'net. It may very well affect others. -- Philip J.
