Firstly...WHY is this bandwidth sucking post in rec.knives???
Secondly...get your facts right Scott... "999.999.999.999" IP
addresses are NOT a possibliity....that number is not arbitrary, but
is the DECIMAL translation of a 32 bit OCTAL value consisting of 4, 8
bit numbers... If you ask ANY computer person...the biggest number
you can get is 254 (2^8.1). It is true that in the future, the IP
addresses will PROBABLY need to get bigger. The net folks are
wrestling with this problem now...much as the phone companies are
wrestling with the probelms of the explosion of personal telephone
numbers.
Finally, while it is a CUTE idea to set up an alternative to
internic...it is PRETTY impractical. IP addresses MUST be unique, so
we really need to have ONE place that assigns them. Otherwise, it
would be as if Sprint, Ma Bell, and the other long distance carriers
could assign their own telephone numbers for folks...
The problem with the Net is that if you get your facts
wrong...there is a WORLD of folks out there happy to correct you!
Regards
Dave
