Have you actually tried Gnumeric ?
As the maintainer I can tell you with a fair amount of certainty
that there are already several areas where Gnumeric walks all over
MS excel. Our analytics are a good starting point.
With bugs like
http://www.woodyswatch.com/office2003/archtemplate.asp?1-n11
And reviews of Gnumeric like
Dr. B. D. McCullough, associate professor of Decision Sciences at
Drexel University and a noted authority on the accuracy of
statistical software, has concluded that "Persons who wish to use a
spreadsheet to perform statistical analyses, and who are concerned
about the accuracy of their results, are advised to use Gnumeric
rather than Excel."
I don't think its a stretch to conclude that nothing is going
to be airborne.

This I'll agree to. MS Excel is an impressive piece of work. The
main problem is that the bugs/limitations that exist are not fixed.
Its taken them 7 years to partially fix their VAR calculation ??
Does MS Excel have features Gnumeric lacks ? certainly. There are
many instances where it is still a better choice. However, we're
catching up and have taken the lead in spots. I suspect your
accountant might be a bit happier with a spreadsheet that calculates
the right answers, than with one that draws a pretty gradient filled
box.
