The level of xray is supposedly monitored and calibrated periodically, so that it will not fog film, or scramble bits on disk, tape, flash ROM, etc. Truth be known, airport xray machines are infrequently checked because of lax government oversight, and cost. Consequently, I never allow any "mission critical" items to be passed through airport xray, but insist they be hand checked. It should also be noted that checked baggage is routinely xrayed, especially at airports with any international traffic.
