Try the new AT&T Model 1910 STU-III Type 1 (data only) device, it
operates at 14.4 Kbps and is the only such device approved by NSA
for unattended (hence automated) use.  It also includes the Hayes
command set so that you can actually use the thing.  The other biggie
is that it includes SACS, for creating access control lists based
on DOA and/or key codes. -- This is required for use in unattended
