Mr. Shostack:

  It all boils down to an open architecture (MSDOS) versus a closed
architecture (MAC). Hell, the original Mac had a disclaimer about even
opening the case, let alone disassembling the OS. The complexity of the 
Mac OS makes it much harder to program for, whereas the simplicity of
DOS is its downfall (in more than one sense!).
