Dear Fellow Information Highway Travellers,

Dr. Urs Gattiker and I are looking for information about computer
viruses that are widespread in Canada. This information will be
presented at the Eicar Conference '95 in being held in Switzerland in November, where
Dr. Gattiker will be representing Canada. The intent of the conference
is to discuss methods to reduce the effects of computer viruses now
present in the wild.

We would appreciate any information or sources of information you
could supply to us. We are specifically looking for the following:

A) -names of computer viruses which are presently widespread in
       Canada
      -how these viruses were distributed

B) -information on the present threat of computer viruses in Canada.
Is it low or high, and what actions are being taken to reduce
this threat (please provide us with specific examples, description of
       incidences if you can)?

Once completed (November, 1995), a summary of information we have collected will be
available for viewing and downloading from the Centre for Technology Studies WWW
page at the following URL:

http://www.mngt.uleth.ca/deprtmnt/tech/tech.htm

Please email any information to myself, or to Dr. Gattiker. Thank
you very much in advance for your assistance in making this project
successful.

Yours truly,

Dr. Urs Gattiker (gattiker@cetus.mngt.uleth.ca)

One good contact is the RCMP. The computer crimes unit in Ottawa
publishes statistics on computer virus incidence. The head of the unit
gave a talk at the Ocunix group several months ago.

I have a paper from the RCMP listing your desired information, but it's
rather out of date I think.

If you're unable to track them down via RCMP information in Ottawa, you
might want to contact gjkriger@gjk.ocunix.on.ca. He convened the
Ocunix seminar, and should still have some contact information.

Another good place to check would be the Military Police and/or Special
Investigations Unit (MP/SIU) at National Defence Headquaters (NDHQ) at
101 Colonel By in Ottawa. I know that they handle all of the virus
investigations for the Ottawa area, and might have information
regarding the rest around Canada.

Facetiously Yours,
