In the Int*l/M*-DOS world there are a lot of security systems that encrypt data before writing to the disk (resp. to a certain partition of the disk). This process is transparent to the application software, except that the user is asked for his password (= cryptographic key) -- and perhaps a slight loss in access velocity. Let's call such a system a 'cryptographic device driver'. It can exist in software or in hardware. What about the UN*X world? Does anybody know about cryptographic device drivers? Is it possible to write one and how to do it (i.e. how to hook an encryption algorithm into a standard device driver)? -- Prof. Dr. Klaus Pommerening Institut fuer Medizinische Statistik und Dokumentation der Johannes-Gutenberg-Universitaet Obere Zahlbacher Strasse 69, W-6500 Mainz
