I have just ordered the free version of Solaris from the States.
As a RedHat/Slackware Linux user in the past I was wondering if people would
kindly point me in the direction of good tech resources and download sites?

IMHO you'll find these a lot thinner on the ground than Linux resources.

Try NG alt.solaris.x86, and http://soldc.sun.com/

I tried it for a while and wasn't over impressed. I couldn't get the
token ring card to work even though it was supposed to be supported and
the S3 Trio 3D I had isn't supported at all (of course XFree86 didn't
support this until this week). If you are ethernet rather than token
ring and have a fairly old graphics card you may fare better. I took it
out in the end and put Linux in instead.

sunsite/metalab (ftp://metalab.unc.edu/) has a lot of Solaris x86 stuff (and
SPARC), too, in addition to the above mentioned sites.
