More Questions about 24 bit displays and Silicon graphics

I am a new khoros user, using khoros installed on a Silicon Graphics Personal
Iris 4-D. The operating system is Irix v4.1
I am encountering some similar problems to those found in the "Frequently Asked
Questions" (FAQ), namely

FAQ #30 - Editimage fails for zoom and annotations and replies with the same
error message as in FAQ.

Upon checking my default visual using "xdpyinfo" it also turned out to be
class: Pseudocolor
depth: 8 planes

Now FAQ #31 states that the X server supplied by Silicon Graphics does not
support the 24 bit Read/Write Direct color visual- so I can't change that.

Another interesting problem is that some editimage features (window/threshold,
colormap) work under strange conditions similar to FAQ #33, that is

: view an image in editimage; get 8 bit Pseudocolor display
: shrink editimage subform so Pan subform appears
: when the cursor is moved in the Pan subform the correct greyscale image
appears and also will be affected by window and thresholding
: when in the Pan subform all other windows lose their colors as in FAQ #33

So my basic question is can I get editimage and all its features to run on my
system to display and annotate 512x512 8 bit gray scale images?
