Matlab Postscript into FrameMaker?

Hey All,

I'm trying to put graphs generated from matlab into FrameMaker. I should
be able to import Encapsulated Postscript and see the picture, but it's
not appearing. What's the best method to include matlab pictures into
FrameMaker? BTW, I'm using FrameMaker on my Macintosh and Dec5000 and Matlab
on a 386 (Mat386 3.5k) or Dec5000.

Thanks,

-Chuck

Hi,

We have tested, and use for documentation purposes, the
current shipping versions of Framemaker on Sun, NeXT, and
the Macintosh. They all work just fine with MATLAB
generated PostScript.

I think you may only be refering a bad preview on the
Macinotsh? The Mac version for Frame has a bug in which the
EPSI bitmap is not read currectly and the preview appears
to be drawn one byte off per row. Since the error is
cumulative, it looks like the whole preview has be skewed
to the right.

If you want a PICT preview that is shown correctly by
Framemaker (and other Macintosh applications) grap
'epsi2pict' from our anonymous FTP server,
ftp.mathworks.com in /pub/contrib/tools. It will remove the
EPSI hex bitmap and replace it with a PICT resource.

I have had problems importing EPS into framemaker documents under X, but haven'thad any problems with EPS on the Mac version. There must be some
incompatibility in the EPS file when it gets over to the Mac. One possible
reason is this (keep in mind I don't know much about any of this). EPS files
ofen have a rough bitmap of the image at the top of the file, followed by the
post script itself. It may be that the format of this bitmap isn't compatible
between the PC and the Mac, etc.
I have also had good luck importing TIFF format into maker documents on the Mac, so if Matlab will export TIFF, you could use that.

I have a similar problem:

I want to include plots from Cricket Graph on the Mac (it exports PICT only)
into maker documents on a Sun. I have tried the following, all with no luck:

Upload the PICT to the sun, use picttoppm, then import from maker. The
	graphics are mostly lost.

Convert to EPSF on the Mac, transfer to the sun and import. The image is
truncated. Same thing happens if I convert from PICT to EPSF on a unix
	machine rather than the Mac.

Convert the PICT to TIFF, transfer the file and import. I think in this
case, maker refused to import the file.

Any advice on this problem would be appreciated too.

Dave

Hi,

If you are running System 7, in the Print dialog click on
the "Print To PostScript File" option. The same think can
be gotten from System 6 if you turn off background printing
and then try to print. After dismissing the Print dialog
box by clicking on OK, hit Command-F. This causes a file
called 'Postscript' to be created, at the root directory
of your startup volume I believe.

The file, created either way, is a translation from the
PICT the application wanted to send to the printer to
PostScript. You could try importing this into Frame on the
Sun.
