Title: Adobe in China, or, Tales from China Print '96

Speaker: Jim DeLaHunt, Pac Rim Printer Engineering,
          Adobe Systems Incorporated

Abstract:

PostScript technology, and computer technology in general, has
revolutionised first the North American and European printing and publishing
industries, and then the Japanese printing and publishing industry. The
same change is poised to occur in China. In fact, China's current five year
plan has singled out the printing industry for investment and modernisation.
But these sweeping changes hinge on key technologies and products being
released. Adobe Systems is providing them.

Last May, at China Print '96, the major Chinese printing industry trade show
(comparable to Seybold in the US), Adobe President Chuck Geschke was the
keynote speaker, and Adobe made several fundamental announcements. Adobe
will release several Chinese language fonts, which will become a
high-quality, universal core font set for use with PostScript printers and
publishing applications. Several Chinese font foundries will also develop
typefaces in Adobe's CID font format. Two vendors will develop PostScript
printers for China. Adobe is releasing its flagship applications in
Simplified Chinese versions. And even more was announced.

Jim DeLaHunt, Engineering Project Manager in the Pacific Rim Printer
Engineering group at Adobe Systems, and longtime IMUG member, will report on
these developments and what they mean for the simplified Chinese publishing
industry both in China and here.
