Just a thought, this code seems to have vanished in 4.2, as posted
sometime in 1992. 4.2 is also almost 2x faster and compresses better, so
there may be other reasons to update, rather than using 4.1 at any patch
level.
I'm going to look in ppmtogif for similar code, any gain would be
useful!
