The policy of comp.sources.misc is to accept just about anything. Sources
with copyright problems are not accepted. Unofficial patches are frowned
on if the author/maintainer of the package is actively updating their package.
Its better to send unofficial patches to the author so that they can be
included in future, tracked, official patches. comp.sources.unix is the
only newsgroup I can remember having an official policy of not accepting
shareware.

While I understand the reasoning behind shareware, and have been told that
there are some who actually make a few dollars from it, in the long run it
does not work in UNIX environments as it does in PC environments.

I personally would rather not post shareware since it is not well received.
The policy of some archive sites is that shareware is not to be archived on
their system. For instance, in this case I can archive the original hebcal
on uunet since is is distribu-ware. (Don't ask... :-) ) but I can't archive
hebcal-1.2 since it explicitly states that it is shareware. So why don't I
just refuse to post shareware you ask ?

But...

If you moderate a newsgroup you have no right
being a petty tyrant. - Kent Landfield

I have always stated the policies of comp.sources.misc were determined
by the needs and wants of its readership. Until enough people indicate
publically that shareware is unacceptable, I will continue using the
current guidelines of accepting shareware even with the headaches and
extra work it causes...
