Your company policy with regards to INTERNET sources

I'd like to know what other companies have in terms of policies when it comes
to getting & installing sources from the net or posting your own sources to
the net.

Some are very restrictive and others naively open.

What's your company policy?

1) with regards to getting sources from the net & installing them
(yes, no, security aspects, fear of copyright infringments do they
    realize the benefits they're gaining/loosing ...)

2) with regards to posting sources to the net.
(yes, no, tightly screened, only absolutely totally unrelated to your work
    stuff only ...)

Naturally, this is NOT a survey from the company that pays my salary.
It's my personal curiosity.

Thanks

We install sources off the net frequently. Some guests do, our system
administrator does, and various staff people do. We generall don't
examine such code carefully.

We don't worry about copyright infringement, because sources posted to
the net generally allow copying. I've never seen one which was posted
but tried to prohibit use. It's questionable if that would even be
enforcable.

   2) with regards to posting sources to the net. (yes, no, tightly
screened, only absolutely totally unrelated to your work stuff only

All our source is made available to the net; most is too large to
post, so it's made available via anonymous FTP. We have no screening.

HERE's what the company policy here at BULL says:

ONLY THE SECURITY OFFICERS (that's me by the way) 'SHOULD' GET UNIX
SOURCES FROM THE NET AND PORT THEM ON OUR PLATFORMS.

BEFORE INSTALLING THEM ON A PRODUCTION SYSTEM, THE PRODUCTS ARE
'SCREENED' AGAINST TROJANS AND THE LIKE. MOREOVER IF THE PRODUCTS
ARE NOT ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY 100 PERCENT PUBLIC DOMAIN (I.E. THERE
ARE RESTRICTIONS FOR USE IN A CORPORATE ENVIRONMENT) AN ASSESSMENT
IS MADE ON WHETHER ACQUIRING A SITE LICENCE IS WORTH THE ADVANTAGES
THE PRODUCT GIVES US. IF NO LICENCE IS GRANTED WE REMOVE SOURCES
FROM OUR SERVERS.

WE HAVE A LIST OF P.D. SOFTWARE 'SUGGESTED' AT CORPORATE LEVEL BUT
NORMALLY SCREENING IS MADE AT THE LOCAL (SITE) LEVEL.

EVERYTHING CAN BE POSTED AS LONG AS COMPLIES WITH THE FOLLOWING:

	(1) IS NOT COMPANY COPYRIGHT
	(2) IS NOT THIRD PARTY COPYRIGHT
	(3) IS NOT CLASSIFIED DATA (COMPANY OR THIRD PARTY)
	(4) THE 'STUFF' IS NOT MISREPRESENTED AS COMPANY 'MADE' or 'ENDORSED'

AND OF COURSE WE EXPECT EVERY EMPLOYEE TO USE 'COMMON SENSE' in POSTING
ANYTHING TO THE NET.

WHY 'NATURALLY' ? ACTUALLT I AM SURPRISED NO COMPANY (AS FAR AS I KNOW)
HAD TACKLED THE ISSUE SO FAR. I SUSPECT UPPER MANAGEMENT HAS NO
CLEAR IDEA OF WHAT ALL THIS NETWORKING STUFF IS ALL ABOUT, THEY TOLERATE
IT AS LONG AS THEY DO NOT HAVE TO SPEND A FORTUNE FOR IT, BUT THE INCREASE
IN NET TRAFFIC WILL FORCE SOMEONE SOME DAY TO UNDERSTAND BETTER THE ENTIRE
ISSUE ....

IMPORTANT: I AM REPRESENTING MYSELF HERE, NOT BULL.
