I plan to do an experiment on using formal specifications between requirements and design. It will be a simple thinking aloud protocol of some subjects performing a design task. One group will take an informal, the other one a formal approach. The question I'd like to answer is whether formal specifications can reduce design errors, and build a model that explains why this is so. My question is: Has there any research been done on the cognitive basis of formal specifications? (I'm already familiar with the work of Guindon, Krasner and Curtis and of Civello. Jeffries and Atwood are also on my literature list) Are there any open questions about the psychological foundations of formal methods that are worth answering and would fit into such an experiment?
