I am currently working in the area of formal methods, particularly in the
area of data security standards. A large amount of this work involves
international efforts, usually involving Europe and the USA.

We have found that whilst most European partners have accepted Formal methods
there seems to be some resistance to there uptake by other countries
(particularly the USA).

Formal methods have been encouraged to cope with the software crisis,
particularly in the areas of safety critical work and security where
malfunction of software would be dangerous or costly in terms of human
life and resources. I would be interested to know how other countries are
dealing with this issue particularly Japan and other South East Asia countries,
China, Australia and Russia. In particular I would be interested in any
research in Japan in this area due to its industrial status.

Do any of these countries have methodologies which they consider better than
Formal methods? and if so on what criteria are they basing this on?
