STL-like hash tables were rejected by the committee at two separate meetings. The rejections stemmed from concerns about non-technical issues such as schedule. > I certainly >hope so, but I would like to know if they are being given strong >consideration for the next revision of the standard. I was >surprised when I discovered them missing from the draft. If by "next revision" you mean the 2nd Committee Draft, due next spring, then the answer is no, not a chance. If you mean the revision that comes 5-years after the standard is complete, the answer is that it is far too early to tell what will or will not be included. --Beman --- [ comp.std.c++ is moderated. I get the impression that the complex job of creating a standard (having already included so much) is creating a familiar vacuum. The vacuum is composed of all of the stuff that may be good technically, but cannot make the cut of doable in the schedule. For large software projects, a major gap is reduced by there being a second effort underway that overlaps the first, to flesh out those things that should be there but could not. There needs to be different amounts of inertia for changes in the language and natural completion of the library contents. The language needs more inertia than natural completion (or extension, if you prefer) of the libraries. But it seems that it may be the other way around, because of the difference in the amount of work involved. A second tier of effort may be needed here as 5 years is too long. Actually, a second tier WILL happen. it is just the matter of whether it has official significance now (or merely usurps it later). This kind of vacuum never lasts. Just some thoughts Good Day Dick Dick.Menninger@DaytonOH.ATTGIS.COM --- [ comp.std.c++ is moderated. Submission address: std-c++@ncar.ucar.edu. Contact address: std-c++-request@ncar.ucar.edu.
